A boater was hospitalized after his jet ski exploded at the Long Lake Marina in Naples Saturday afternoon.

According to Maine Warden Service, 31-year-old Karl Marchionda of Danvers, Massachusetts had refueled his Sea-Doo personal watercraft and was attempting to start it when it exploded, causing Mr. Marchionda to be thrown onto the pier.

Mr. Marchionda was transported to Bridgton Hospital for non-life-threatening facial injuries. No one else was involved.

Officials are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

In 2011, the U.S. Coast Guard counted 4588 accidents that involved 758 deaths, 3081 injuries and approximately $52 million dollars of damage to property as a result of recreational boating accidents.
