A motorist escaped serious injury after swerving to avoid an animal and striking a wall on Waldoboro Road Thursday.

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, 34-year-old Leah Olson of Southborough, Massachusetts was traveling southbound in her 2012 Ford Explorer sport-utility vehicle when an unknown animal entered the roadway. In attempting to avoid striking it, Ms. Olson lost control of her vehicle, struck a ditch, and struck a rock wall.

Ms. Olson was not seriously hurt. No one else was involved.

Officials are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 210 motorists died in 2010 in motor vehicle crashes involving animals.
