York County, Maine – June 18, 2012

A pedestrian was hospitalized after being struck by a vehicle at420 Alfred Street Monday afternoon.

According to the Biddeford Police Department, an unidentified patron of Planet Fitness was struck in the business’ parking lot around 1:50 p.m. by a vehicle driven by an unidentified driver. It is unclear if the driver saw the pedestrian before the collision occurred.

The patron was transported to Southern Maine Medical Center with unspecified injuries by a Planet Fitness employee.

Officers are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that a pedestrian dies in a U.S. traffic accident every 110 minutes and one is injured every nine minutes.
