Cumberland County, Maine – June 26, 2012

A motorist was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after being run over after a dispute on Mill Street Tuesday night.

According to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, 35-year-old Richard Valliere of Windham allegedly ran over an unidentified 51-year-old male pedestrian from Raymond after a verbal and physical confrontation with him and others. Mr. Valliere and his passenger, 51-year-old Hubert Libby of Gorham, arrived on the scene to settle a supposed debt. Mr. Libby allegedly punched someone at the scene before he and Mr. Valliere ran over the victim and then fled in Mr. Valliere’s pickup truck.

The victim was transported to Maine Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Mr. Valliere faces reckless conduct with a motor vehicle charges while Mr. Libby faces assault charges.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2009, 4,092 pedestrians were killed and an estimated 59,000 were injured in traffic crashes in the United States.
