Somerset County, Maine – June 25, 2012

A motorist faces charges after reversing his vehicle into The Belmont Motel and then fleeing the scene Monday night.

According to the Skowhegan Police Department, 81-year-old John Joseph Fraser of Canada was apparently attempting to park his vehicle after securing a room at the motel when he lost control and reversed into some outdoor furniture and a room. Mr. Fraser fled the scene, heading northbound on Maine State Route 201, but was discovered and apprehended after pulling off the roadway to repair a flat tire.

Mr. Fraser faces charges of operating under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.

The motel sustained over $4,500 in damages from the collision.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, alcohol-impaired motor vehicle crashes cost more than an estimated $37 billion annually.
