Oxford County, Maine – June 25, 2012

A motorist was hospitalized after a two vehicle collision at the intersection of Main Street and Mechanic Falls Road Monday morning.

According to the Oxford Police Department, 70-year-old Emile Pepin of Auburn was traveling southbound in his 2009 Ford Focus around 6:50 a.m. when he attempted to make a left turn and failed to yield to the northbound 1998 Ford Explorer driven by 63-year-old Thomas Leahy of Wakefield, Massachusetts. The impact caused Mr. Pepin to strike a curb, launch into the air, and strike an unoccupied semi parked in the Big Apple gasoline station parking lot located at 467 Main Street.

Mr. Pepin was transported to Stephens Memorial Hospital with unspecified injuries. Mr. Leahy was not injured.

The National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that driver error was the primary cause in 90 percent of major traffic crashes.
