Washington County, Maine – June 25, 2012

An elderly motorist died after crashing into an embankment off Maine State Route 9 Monday morning.

According to Maine State Police, 75-year-old Alvah Hawkins of Wesley was traveling eastbound in his 2000 Ford Taurus around 7:10 a.m. when he lost control for unknown reasons and left the roadway. In trying to correct his vehicle, he crossed the roadway again and struck an embankment.

Mr. Hawkins was flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center, but died there from his injuries. No one else was involved in the crash.

Officials are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

In 2008, there were a total of 37,261 traffic fatalities in the United States according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
