Kennebec County, Maine – June 22, 2012
A worker died after being electrocuted at a work site located at 285 Spears Corner Road Friday afternoon.
According to West Gardiner Fire & Rescue, 53-year-old Ronald Hickey was working in the basket of a cherry picker, trimming foliage, when he inadvertently came into direct contact with a live wire and was electrocuted.
Mr. Hickey died instantly. No one else was involved in the incident.
A power outage left a few thousand Central Maine Power customers in the dark for three or four hours after the incident.
According to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, 4,690 workers were killed on the job in 2010 — more than 90 a week or nearly 13 deaths every day.
