Cumberland County, Maine – June 22, 2012
A motorist died and another was injured after crashing and striking a tree off Maine State Route 100 Friday morning.
According to the Falmouth Police Department, 22-year-old Casey Green of Cumberland and 24-year-old Matthew Blanchard of South Portland were traveling northbound in a Chevrolet Cobalt around 2:50 a.m. when they left the roadway and crashed into a tree. It is not known who was driving at the time of the collision.
Ms. Green was transported to Maine Medical Center, but later died of her injuries. Mr. Blanchard was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Officers are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.
In 2008, there were a total of 37,261 traffic fatalities in the United States according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
UPDATE: Authorities have identified Mr. Blanchard as the driver of the vehicle when the collision occurred. Mr. Blanchard denied being the driver, but later admitted to allegedly falling asleep at the wheel. He is being charged with causing a deadly accident while driving with a suspended license.
