Lincoln County, Maine – June 21, 2012
A motorist died after crashing a dump truck into a utility pole and a wooded area off U.S. Route 1 Thursday.
According to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, 72-year-old Malcolm L. Giles of Edgecomb was traveling southbound in a 2004 Peterbilt dump truck around noon when he lost control and left the roadway. Mr. Giles then struck a utility pole and an embankment before coming to a stop in a wooded area.
Mr. Giles was found dead at the scene.
An unknown amount of diesel fuel was spilled in the collision.
Officials are conducting an investigation to determine the cause of this incident.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that more than 500,000 semis and large commercial vehicles were involved in traffic crashes in 2010.
