A motorist escaped injury after striking a utility pole and crashing her rental car on Sabattus Street Sunday morning.

According to the Lewiston Police Department, the 2012 Hertz rental Ford driven by 45-year-old Veronica K. Murrin of Richmond struck a utility pole for unknown reasons around 3:25 a.m.

Ms. Murrin was not injured. It is unclear if there were passengers in her vehicle.

The vehicle sustained major damage in the crash and was towed from the scene.

Officers are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

The National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that driver error was the primary cause in 90 percent of major traffic crashes.
