Washington County, Maine — February 1, 2012

Police say two people were hospitalized Wednesday after a fiery crash involving a semi and a tanker truck in the Beddington area.

Deputies with the Washington County Sheriff’s Department report that an unidentified trucker was operating a semi along Route 9 around 8:55 a.m. As the truck approached the corner of Route 193, it was involved in a collision with a Webber Energy Fuels vehicle.

Investigators say the impact caused the cab of the semi to ignite, although no propane burned. Paramedics transported both drivers to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Neither has been identified. In 2008, 380,000 large trucks (gross vehicle weight rating greater than 10,000 pounds) were involved in traffic crashes in the United States; 4,066 were involved in fatal crashes. A total of 4,229 people died (11% of all the traffic fatalities reported in 2008) and an additional 90,000 were injured in those crashes.
