Freeport, Maine — January 25, 2012

Police say an elderly man died Wednesday in a wrong-way crash on a highway near Freeport.

According to the Maine State Police, 78-year-old Graham resident Daniel Cressey Sr. entered the southbound lanes of Interstate 295 heading north. Around 6:55 p.m., his vehicle collided with one driven by 58-year-old Holden resident Mary Warner near Exit 22 (Mallett Drive).

Paramedics transported Ms. Warner to Maine Medical Centerfor treatment. Mr. Cressey, meanwhile, died from injuries suffered in the crash.

Police shut down the roadway until roughly 9 p.m. as they conducted an investigation and cleared debris. According to the Maine Department of Public Safety, 136 travelers were killed in traffic accidents in 2011, the lowest number in 52 years.
