Auburn, Maine – January 3, 2011

Authorities say a construction worker was hospitalized Tuesday after falling from a turnpike overpass.

The Auburn Fire Department reports that the unidentified man was part of a construction crew working on Interstate 95 (the Maine Turnpike) around 10:25 a.m. Investigators say the victim was standing atop a steel beam when it moved for unknown reasons.

He was vaulted up in the air before plummeting 30 feet to the ground below. Paramedics transported him to a hospital in Lewiston for leg injuries.

It is unclear whether the Maine office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration will investigate. Approximately 700 crashes occur each year in Maine work zones. Workers in these areas are vulnerable to serious injury, as are vehicle occupants according to the Maine Department of Transport.
