An accident on Interstate 70 near Ellsworth killed four people at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday according to state police.

The accident happened in the eastbound lanes north of Ellsworth according to the Kansas Highway Patrol when an SUV collided with a semi. The semi had stopped on the side of the road for a mechanical issue when the SUV rear-ended it and caught fire.

An unidentified 8-year-old child was airlifted to a Salina hospital, but the other four victims in the SUV were unable to be identified.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the number of fatalities along America’s roadways declined in 2010 for the fifth-straight year. The total number of highway deaths last year was 32,788, down 3 percent over 2009.

UPDATE: Officials identified the deceased as Debra Dorrell, 51, and Kevin Dorell, 54. They were the grandparents of 15-year-old Justin Turner, 11-year-old Joe Turner, and 9-year-old Jonah Turner. Justin and Joe died instantly in the accident, while Jonah was taken to a Wichita hospital with undisclosed injuries.
