Police say an unlicensed teen driver and his passenger were injured Monday when their vintage Mini Cooper was rear-ended near Bremen.

According to troopers with the Indiana State Police, 52-year-old Nappanee resident Rick A. Willard was behind the wheel of a 2000 Dodge Neon as it traveled north along Main Street (Indiana 331). As Mr. Willard approached 4C Road, around 4:55 p.m., he observed the driver of a 1967 Austin Mini Cooper slow to attempt a left-hand turn.

Investigators say Mr. Willard was unable to avoid rear-ending the Mini Cooper, driven by 15-year-old Bremen resident Theodore Hochstetler. Paramedics transported Theodore to Memorial Hospital of South Bend for treatment of injuries, along with his passenger, 45-year-old Bremen resident Johnny R. Kuhns.

Investigators determined that Theodore was operating the vehicle without a license. According to the National Safety Council, there are over 2.5 million rear-end crashes every year. This makes them the most common type of accident.

Police say an elderly motorist ran a red light Tuesday in the Bloomington area, causing an accident that injured himself and another man.

According to troopers with the Indiana State Police, 69-year-old Bloomington resident Larry Rogers was behind the wheel of a 1999 Ford van as it traveled near the intersection of Smith Pike and Indiana 46. Around 11:25 a.m., Mr. Rogers obsserved an eastbound 1999 Ford pickup truck enter the intersection.

Investigators say Mr. Rogers was unable to avoid a collision with the pickup, driven by 73-year-old Spencer resident Robert Knapp. Paramedics responded to the scene and transported both men to Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Officers at the scene believe Mr. Knapp entered the intersection against a red light. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2008 more than 2.3 million reported intersection-related crashes, resulted in more than 7,770 fatalities and approximately 733,000 injuries.

Police say a female motorist crashed Sunday in the Owensburg accident, injuring herself and her teenage passenger.

According to deputies with the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, 37-year-old Springville resident Marcia Hooten was behind the wheel of a vehicle as it traveled south along Indiana 45. At an unknown hour, Ms. Hooten apparently lost control.

Investigators say the vehicle left the roadway and smashed into a nearby utility pole. Paramedics responded to the scene and transported Ms. Hooten to Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital for treatment, along with her passenger, 14.

A law-enforcement officer was injured Tuesday when he fell through a set of stairs at an Indianapolis residence.

According to reports, an unidentified deputy with the Marion County Sheriff’s Department was serving a warrant some time after noon. Investigators say he was climbing a set of outdoor stairs at a residence located along Draper Street, near Palmer Street, when the stairs broke apart.

The officer fell and suffered a back injury. It is unclear whether he was hospitalized.

According to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, 4,690 workers were killed on the job in 2010 — more than 90 a week or nearly 13 deaths every day.

Police believe a motorist was under the influence Sunday when he struck another vehicle in the Chesterton area, injuring himself and another driver.

According to reports, an unidentified motorist was behind the wheel of a vehicle as it traveled east along U.S. Route 20. As the driver approached Tremont Road, around 6:35 p.m., he observed a westbound vehicle veer into oncoming traffic.

Investigators say the eastbound driver was unable to avoid a collision. Paramedics responded to the scene and transported him to Porter Regional Hospital for treatment of injuries to his right ankle and chest.

The wrong-way driver, meanwhile was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital for treatment of a wrist fracture, pelvic fracture and internal trauma. Authorities are exploring the possibility that impairment was a factor.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, alcohol-impaired motor vehicle crashes cost an estimated $37 billion annually.

Police say at least two people were injured Monday when a total of seven vehicles collided in two separate incidents near West Terrea Haute.

According to troopers with the Indiana State Police, an unidentified motorist was operating a truck on behalf of the Indiana Department of Transportation as it traveled along Interstate 70. As the driver approached Exit 3 (Darwin Road), some time before 1:55 p.m., the truck made contact with a pickup.

Investigators say the incident caused traffic to slow down, causing an unidentified trucker to strike five vehicles with his semi. Officers at the scene have confirmed that two people were injured, possibly a trucker.

Police say a motorcyclist was injured Monday during a collision with a van in the Lafayette area.

The Lafayette Police Department reports that an unidentified motorcyclist was riding along U.S. Route 52 (Sagamore Parkway South). As the rider passed between Main Street and Maple Point Drive, around 10:25 p.m., he observed a vehicle in front of him attempt to turn into the parking lot.

Investigators say the biker went around the vehicle at the same time a van was pulling out of the parking lot and onto Sagamore Parkway. He was unable to avoid a collision. Paramedics responded to the scene and transported the rider to Franciscan St. Elizabeth East Hospital for treatment of leg injuries.

Police say a female motorist and her two passengers were injured Saturday during a crash in the Marion area

According to deputies with the  Grant County Sheriff’s Department, 46-year-old Swayzee resident Barbara Hale was behind the wheel of a vehicle as it traveled near the corner of Buffalo Avenue and 16th Street. Around 1:55 p.m., Ms. Hale made contact with a vehicle operated by 23-year-old Marion resident Bridgette E. Valle.

Ms. Valle suffered neck injuries. Her passenger Swayzee resident Shara Beck experienced chest pains, while a second passenger, 42-year-old Fairmout resident Stacey E. Petit, injured her back.

Police say a pedestrian was hit by his own vehicle Sunday when a suspected thief jumped behind the wheel, then crashed into a nearby pond near Fort Wayne.

According to deputies with the Allen County Sheriff’s Department, Eric Wright left his keys in his Toyota Camry while visiting a residence in the Glens of Liberty Mills subdivision. Fort Wayne resident Jeremy Ensch then entered the vehicle and began to drive away.

Mr. Wright gave chase and tried to stop Mr. Ensch, but was hit by a the Camry, flipping over the vehicle and suffering facial injuries. Investigators say Mr. Ensch was making his getaway east along Yohne Road, between Interstate 69 and Smith Road, when he lost control and veered into a nearby pond around 4:55 p.m.

Paramedics transported Mr. Ensch to a nearby hospital for treatment of critical injuries. He was placed under suspicion of leaving an accident scene, receiving stolen property and auto theft.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that pedestrian deaths fell 12 percent from 1996 to 2006. Over that period, the total number of deaths fell from 5,449 to 4,784.

Police say a child was killed Monday during a crash near Haubstadt involving two semis and two cars.

According to deputies with the Gibson County Sheriff’s Department, an unidentified trucker was behind the wheel of a tanker truck with a red cab as it traveled along Interstate 64. As the tanker approached County Road 200 East, around 5:20 p.m.,  it made head-to-head contact with a second semi, bearing the name “Schnucks,” in the westbound lane.

Investigators say two other vehicles, one of them a black sedan, eventually became entangled in the wreck. Paramedics responded to the scene and transported a female child in one of the cars, 11, to St. Mary’s Medical Center, but doctors were unable to save her.

The mother and father of the deceased victim were also taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, along with a fourth, unidentified victim. Firefighters used hydraulic extrication tools to free a male occupant of the black sedan.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that more than 500,000 semis and large commercial vehicles were involved in traffic crashes in 2010. Those accidents resulted in injuries to more than 100,000 people and more than 5,000 deaths.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, an unidentified motorist was behind the wheel of a vehicle as it traveled along East Ohio Street, between Delaware Street and Alabama Street. As the car approached Hudson Street, around 8:25 a.m., it made contact with a subject on foot.

Paramedics responded to the scene, although the nature and severity of injuries is unclear. Neither the victim, nor the driver has been identified by name.

Police say a female pedestrian was injured Friday when she was dragged by a car along a street in the Gary area.

According to officers with the Gary Police Department, the unidentified victim was at Shaw’s, located at 1124 Virginia Avenue. Investigators say she became engaged in an argument with two other women, 21-year-old Royal Ruffin and 23-year-old Simone Clark.

Around 2:50 a.m., all three women were asked to leave the establishment. Once outside, Ms. Clark got behind the wheel of a car and pulled the victim’s arm through the open window and began to drive, dragging her along.

Officers observed the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. Paramedics responded to the scene and transported the female pedestrian to Gary’s Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus for treatment of possible toe breaks an arm break and other injuries.

Ms. Ruffin and Ms. Clark face charges of criminal recklessness and battery. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that a pedestrian dies in a U.S. traffic accident every 110 minutes and one is injured every nine minutes.

Police say a female subject was injured Monday when she was run over by two horses in the Blountsville area.

According to the Blountsville Volunteer Fire Department, the unidentified woman, 37, was working with the horses at Stoney Creek Horse Farm, located along East County Road 900 North, between North County Road 575 East and North County Road 675 East. Around 12:40 p.m., the horses apparently spooked and trampled the victim.

Paramedics responded to the scene and transported her by helicopter to a hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of injuries to her left leg, hip and pelvis. She is reportedly the wife of the farm’s owner.

It is unclear whether the Occupational Safety and Health Administration will investigate.

Police say a motorcycle was involved in a collision Tuesday in Indianapolis.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department report that an unidentified motorcyclist was riding in the vicinity of Meridian Street and Interstate 70. Some time before 8 a.m., the rider crashed for unknown reasons.

Officers at the scene have not confirmed whether anyone was hurt. No names have been released.

According to the Indiana Criminal Justice institute, there are more than 200,000 registered motorcycles in Indiana.

Police say a motorist fatally struck a pedestrian Monday in Indianapolis, then fled the scene.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department reports that an unidentified motorist was behind the wheel of a silver or gray vehicle as it traveled north along Dr. Andrew J. Brown Avenue. As the driver approached 24th Street, around 11:55 p.m., the car made contact with a subject on foot as she walked west.

Rather than stopping to administer aid, the driver allegedly fled the scene. Paramedics responded, but were unable to save the female pedestrian, 48.

The U.S. Department of Transportation shows that nighttime hit-and-run crashes decreased significantly over a six-month period after enforcement began compared to the previous year in the same period.

Police say a scooter collided with a sport-utility vehicle Saturday in the Terre Haute area, injuring the rider.

According to officers with the Terre Haute Police Department, an unidentified motorist was behind the wheel of a sport-utility vehicle as it traveled through the area around 1:55 a.m. As the SUV approached the corner of Wabash Avenue and 25th Street, it made contact with a scooter.

Paramedics transported the rider to Indianapolis’s Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital for treatment of major trauma. Neither party has been identified by name.

According to officers with the Muncie Police Department, an unidentified conductor was operating the train on behalf of Norfolk-Southern as it traveled through town. As the train approached a crossing near the corner of Hoyt Avenue and Willard Street, around 10:55 a.m., it made contact with a subject on foot as she walked east along Willard.

Paramedics responded to the scene and transported the female pedestrian to Indiana University Ball Memorial Hospital, but doctors were unable to save her. The victim might have been listening to headphones at the time she was struck.

According to reports, 82-year-old Juanita Cress was behind the wheel of a vehicle as it traveled east along East County Road 900 North. As Ms. Cress approached North County Road 900 East, some time after noon, she hit the right side of a northbound vehicle, operated by 17-year-old Frances Myers.

Paramedics responded to the scene and transported Ms. Cress and Frances to Adams Memorial Hospital for treatment. Officers at the scene ticketed Frances for failing to wear a safety belt and entering the intersection against a stop sign.

Investigators say Mr. Gochis was unable to avoid a collision with the car, operated by 76-year-old Bloomfield, Michigan resident Marian Montgomery Randall. Paramedics responded to the scene and airlifted Ms. Randall to Fort Wayne’s Parkview Regional Medical Center for head trauma and cuts, as well as foot, vertebral, pelvic, femoral, rib and humeral fractures.

Paramedics responded to the scene and transported both drivers to a nearby hospital for treatment. No names have yet been released.

According to troopers with the Indiana State Police, an unidentified trucker was behind the wheel of a semi as it traveled along Interstate 80 (Interstate 94). As the semi approached Exit 6 (Burr Street), around 3:35 a.m., he collided with another semi, a car and a motorcycle.

Investigators say the impact caused one of the vehicles to catch fire. Paramedics responded to the scene, but were unable to save the motorcyclist.

According to a pilot study by Westat and Dynamic Services International on behalf of the National Transportation Safety Administration, the fatality rate for motorcyclists age 40 to 49 has increased 38 percent.

UPDATE: The deceased victim was operating a 2002 Road Hawk trike, a three-wheeled motorcycle, east near Chast Street when he fell from his mount. He was then struck by 30-year-old trucker and Country Club Hills, Illinois resident Bryant Winfield as he operated a 2000 Volvo semi on behalf of Bloomingdale, Illinois-based Fly Fast.

Meanwhile, the trike continued to roll and was hit by 28-year-old Tonopah, Arizona resident Janet Gutierrez, who was driving a 2003 Ford Taurus sedan. Ms. Gutierrez turned sharply in an attempt to avoid the collision and struck 37-year-old trucker and Indian Head Park, Illinois resident Marko Jovicic, who was driving a 1998 International semi.

Paramedics transported Ms. Gutierrez to Gary’s Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus, along with her passenger, 18-year-old Phoenix, Arizona resident Lily Jimenez.

UPDATE: The motorcyclist has been identified as 64-year-old Valparaiso resident John Arama.

Police say a man stole a woman’s purse Thursday in the Evansville area, then ran her over as he attempted to escape.

The Evansville Police Department reports that 23-year-old Ryan Thompson grabbed a purse belonging to 32-year-old Evansville resident Angeonne Bryant while both were at Wood Creek Inn & Suites, located at 2530 U.S. Route 41. Mr. Thompson ran to his car with Ms. Bryant right behind him.

As he backed out of a parking space, Mr. Thompson’s car ran over Ms. Bryant’s legs, then ran her over a second time when he pulled forward. Paramedics responded to the scene and transported Ms. Bryant to St. Mary’s Medical Center for treatment.

Police caught up with Mr. Thompson and he was arrested on suspicion of possessing marijuana and robbery. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that a pedestrian dies in a U.S. traffic accident every 110 minutes and one is injured every nine minutes.

Police say a child bicyclist was injured Saturday when she was hit by a vehicle in the Princeton area.

According to officers with the Princeton Police Department, an unidentified motorist was behind the wheel of a vehicle as it traveled through town. Around 3:25 p.m., the car made contact with a bicycle near the corner of Seminary Street and Brumfield Avenue.

Paramedics responded to the scene and transported the rider, Colleen Schneider, 8, to a Gibson General Hospital for treatment of head injuries, fractures to her face and a collarbone break. She was later transferred to Evansville’s St. Mary’s Medical Center.

Police say two children and two pregnant women were among six people injured Thursday during a pile-up near Van Buren.

According to troopers with the Indiana State Police, an unidentified motorist was behind the wheel of a van as it traveled north along Interstate 69. As the van’s driver approached mile-marker 268, near County Road 400 North, around 3:55 p.m., the van slowed for stopped traffic and was hit from behind.

The impact forced the van into a third vehicle, operated by an unidentified man. Investigators say another motorist split the lane and drove between two cars to avoid a more serious injury.

Eventually, six vehicles became entangled in the wreckage, including a dark-colored four-door sedan, a sport-utility vehicle, a white four-door sedan, a blue minivan and a white van. Paramedics responded to the scene and treated two pregnant females for undisclosed injuries, their fetuses were reportedly unhurt.

Meanwhile, an 11-year-old child was airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment of a possible leg break and head trauma, along with a 9-year-old child, who also suffered head trauma.

Authorities say the van’s driver was 26-year-old Loogootee resident Mark  Knepp. Mr. Knepp was hit from behind by a Mercury Grand Marquis sedan driven by 20-year-old West Salem, Ohio resident Johsua Forbes, causing the van to hit 73-year-old Milton, Florida resident Stephen Knox, who was driving a Toyota Sienna minivan.

Cottonwood, Arizona resident Timothy Yates, 25, split the lane and hit two other cars. The struck vehicles were a Chrysler Town & Country minivan driven by Fishers resident Richard Reid, 31, and 42-year-old Roy Roberts, who was driving a Toyota Corolla.

The Brandenburgs were passengers in Mr. Knepp’s van and a fourth passenger, 37-year-old Grabill resident Richard Lengacher was hospitalized for a laceration.

Ms. Smith, meanwhile, was a passenger in Mr. Yates’s vehicle. Mr. Yates was also taken to Marion General Hospital for a leg injury.

Other unidentified victims were treated for abrasions and lacerations.

Police say a worker was hospitalized Thursday after receiving an electric shock at Carmel Clay Public Library.

According to reports, the unidentified employee was installing air conditioners at the library, located at 55 Fourth Avenue Southeast, just south of Main Street. At an unknown hour, he suffered an electric shock.

Paramedics responded to the scene and transported the victim to a nearby hospital for treatment.  It is unclear whether the Occupational Safety and Health Administration will investigate.

Police say a medical helicopter was summoned to the scene of an accident Sunday in the Shelbyville area.

According to deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, an unidentified motorist was behind the wheel of a vehicle as it traveled through the area around 2:55 p.m. As the driver approached the intersection of East County Road 350 South and South County Road 150 East, it crashed for unknown reasons.

The nature and extent of the injuries remains unclear. The number of vehicles involved is also unknown.

Police say a vehicle struck a boulder and tipped Sunday in the Indianapolis area, injuring a female traveler and her son.

Investigators say the vehicle left the roadway and struck a nearby boulder, causing the car to tip onto its passenger’s side. Paramedics transported the driver and a female passenger, his mother, to Community North Hospital for treatment.
