Ripley County, Indiana — January 5, 2014

Police say a minivan crashed Sunday in the Versailles area, killing himself and injuring two passengers.

According to reports, Zachary Smith of Versailles, 32, was behind the wheel of a minivan as it traveled along an unidentified roadway. Around 3:25 a.m., Mr. Smith apparently lost control.

Investigators say the van left the roadway, crashed into a nearby depression and flipped. Paramedics responded to the scene and transported Mr. Smith to Batesville’s Margaret Mary Community Hospital, but he died in transit.

Two other occupants were treated for lesser injuries. According to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, 749 travelers were killed in 674 fatal traffic accidents in Indiana in 2011.
