Marion County, Indiana — August 19, 2013

Police say a man was hit and killed by a vehicle Monday in Beech Grove, a day after he was stabbed at a local bar.

According to officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Indianapolis resident Ronald Vanatta, 33, was riding in a pickup truck as it traveled along Emerson Avenue. As the vehicle passed between Hornet Avenue and Churchman Avenue, around 10:55 p.m., he fell out for unknown reasons.

Investigators say the driver of an oncoming hatchback, possibly a 1990s model Mercury Sable or Ford Taurus, was unable to avoid Mr. Vanatta. Rather than stopping to administer aid, the motorist fled the scene.

Paramedics responded to the scene and rushed Mr. Vanatta to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital, but doctors were unable to save him. On Sunday, August 18, Mr. Vanatta was arrested outside Riff Raff’s bar, located at 2409 English Avenue, after being involved in an altercation in which he was stabbed.

Witnesses have been asked to call (317) 782-4949 with any additional information. According to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, 63 pedestrians died in accidents with vehicles in 2011.
