Vigo County, Indiana – July 31, 2013

Police believe a teenage motorist was under the influence Wednesday when he crashed in the Terre Haute area, killing his passenger.

According to reports, 18-year-old Terre Haute resident Michael S. Collier was behind the wheel of a vehicle as it traveled along North County Road 700 West (Miami Gardens Road). As he passed between Stewart Avenue and Davis Avenue, around 2:55 a.m., Mr. Collier apparently lost control.

Investigators say the vehicle crashed. Rather than stopping to administer aid, Mr. Collier and two other occupants, a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old, fled the scene.

Paramedics responded, but were unable to save passenger Jesse Kelly, 19. Authorities later caught up with Mr. Collier, who has been arrested on suspicion of consuming alcohol as a minor, trespassing and leaving an accident scene.

Officers at the scene determined that the vehicle was reported stolen. According to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, 749 travelers were killed in 674 fatal traffic accidents in Indiana in 2011.
