Lake County, Indiana - July 10, 2013

Police say a female motorist struck a child on a bicycle Wednesday in the Schererville area, then fled the scene.

According to officers with the Schererville Police Department, an unidentified woman, described as a Caucasian or Latina with dark hair, was behind the wheel of a dark-colored minivan as it traveled through the area around 4:55 p.m. As the van approached the intersection of Westwood Court and 81st Place, she made contact with a bicycle.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the female driver stopped to speak with the rider, a child, and a companion, before picking up her bumper and leaving the scene. Paramedics responded and transported the boy to Merrillville’s Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus for treatment.

The suspect was clad in shorts and a tank top at the time of the crash. Witnesses have been asked to call (219) 322-5000 with any additional information.

According to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, 13 cyclists died during accidents with vehicles in 2011.
