La Porte Police Department – March 28, 2013

Police say a trash truck smashed into a car Thursday in the LaPorte area, killing a man and injuring his wife.

According to deputies with the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department, an unidentified motorist was operating a trash truck on behalf of the Michigan City Sanitary District as it traveled through the area at an unknown hour. As the driver approached the corner of County Road 300 North and Johnson Road, he observed a Chevrolet Impala sedan cross into his path.

Investigators say the operator of the trash truck was unable to avoid a collision with the Impala, driven by 68-year-old Michigan City resident Barbara Riggs. Paramedics responded to the scene and transported Mrs. Riggs by helicopter to South Bend Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Her husband and passenger, 70-year-old David Riggs, died on scene. At least one of the three occupants of the trash truck was injured.

The National Safety Council reports that traffic fatalities increased 5 percent in 2012. A recent study revealed 36,200 traffic deaths last year, up from 34,600 in 2011, the first increase in seven years.
