Lake County, Indiana – March 17, 2013

Police say a motorist triggered a fatal rear-end crash Sunday in the St. John area, then tried to run off.

According to deputies with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, 39-year-old St. John resident David Hatfield was behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Camaro sports car as it traveled west along U.S. Route 231 (109th Avenue). As Mr. Hatfield approached Parrish Avenue, around 7:50 a.m., he smashed into the rear of a 1998 GMC van.

Investigators say the impact caused the van — driven by 59-year-old Crown Point resident — to catch fire. Mr. Hatfield reportedly attempted to flee on foot, but was arrested by responding officers.

Paramedics responded to the scene, but were unable to save Mr. Grebauer. It is unclear whether Mr. Hatfield was hurt, but he was arrested on suspicion of hit and run.

According to the National Safety Council, there are over 2.5 million rear-end crashes every year. This makes them the most common type of accident.
