Johnson County, Indiana – March 1, 2013

Police say a male motorist crashed Friday in the Whiteland, then stole a vehicle and crashed again.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office reports that 38-year-old Shelbyville resident Bert K. Shepard was behind the wheel of a vehicle as it traveled along County Road 600 East (South Harvey Road). As Mr. Shepard approached East County Road 700 North (Clark School Road), around 3:25 p.m., he apparently lost control.

Investigators say the car left the roadway and struck a nearby utility pole. A witness then pulled over and attempted to administer aid.

That’s when Mr. Shepard allegedly jumped into the vehicle and took off with his injured female passenger. He dropped off the woman to seek medical attention, then continued driving before crashing.

Officers arrested Mr. Shepard on suspicion of operating while intoxicated and leaving an accident scene. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, alcohol-impaired motor vehicle crashes cost more than an estimated $37 billion annually.
