A Purdue pharmacy student is dead after being hit by an Amtrak train Sunday morning in Lafayette.

The Lafayette Police Department reports 21-year-old Phillip C. Slater was fatally struck on the tracks near the Wabash Avenue overpass around 8 a.m.

Witnesses reportedly told police they saw Mr. Slater lying on the tracks before he was hit, and the incident is currently being investigated as a possible suicide.

According to the Federal Railroad Administration, there were 13,067 railroad-related accidents in 2007 resulting in 8,800 injuries and 851 deaths.
