Tippecanoe County, Indiana — December 4, 2012

No one was seriously injured Tuesday in a one-vehicle crash on Northwestern Avenue in West Lafayette.

The West Lafayette Police Department reports the accident occurred around 5 p.m. when a driver left the roadway by Chelsea Road and struck a utility pole, bringing down power lines. It is unclear what caused the unidentified driver to lose control of the vehicle.

At least one person sustained minor-to-moderate injuries in the accident.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, trees are the most common fixed object struck. Fifty percent of deaths in fixed object crashes in 2010 involved a vehicle striking a tree. Utility poles and traffic barriers were the next most common objects struck, accounting for 14 and 8 percent of deaths, respectively.
