Marion County, Indiana – August 31, 2012

Police say a traveler was injured Monday during an accident in the Indianapolis area.

According to officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, 41-year-old Indianapolis resident Daniel N. Diaz was driving a blue 2008 Honda Civic east along 86th Street. As Mr. Diaz approached Keystone Avenue, around 3:30 p.m., he was hit from behind by a 1998 Toyota Corolla.

Investigators say the Corolla’s driver, 16-year-old Laurel resident Thomas E. Gerndt, glanced at a GPS device moments before the accident. Paramedics responded to the scene and treated Mr. Diaz for a back injury.

Distracted driving was the cause of collisions that killed 5,474 people and injured over 448,000 people in the United States in 2009.
