The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department believes that Scott Kwast, 51,  had what they are calling a “medical event” before a crash that claimed his life on Sunday morning. Mr. Kwast was traveling in his pickup truck on Buckeye Road when he ran off the road and hit several small trees near Douglas Road.

The accident occurred around 6:30 a.m., and officers found Mr. Kwast unresponsive in his vehicle. It is not known if the crash was the cause of death or the medical event that Mr. Kwast suffered.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 1.13 fatalities occurred for every 100 million miles of travel in 2009. The rate in 1966 was 5.5 deaths per 100 million miles.
