Oakville, Indiana — Febaruary 1, 2012

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Department was called to the scene of a fatal accident Wednesday evening on Indiana State Route 3 just south of its intersection with Delaware County Road 775. The accident occurred just past 8 p.m. when authorities believe a car left the southbound lanes and went into a ditch before striking a tree.

One woman in the car was conscious after the accident before being taken to Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie. Her name and current condition was not released. The name of the man killed in the accident was also not released.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 1.13 fatalities occurred for every 100 million miles of travel in 2009. The rate in 1966 was 5.5 deaths per 100 million miles.
