Portage, Indiana — January 30, 2012
Ellen Higel, 39, is facing charges of DWI after an accident with injury on U.S. Route 6 at Willowcreek Road on Monday. the Portage Police Department says that Ms. Higel was driving her SUV Monday at 9:30 p.m. when she crashed.
Details about the accident were not released, but Ms. Higel failed a field sobriety test and allegedly tested positive for alcohol and THC at Porter Hospital in Portage. An 11-year old boy in her vehicle suffered a broken arm, while two other children were also in the vehicle.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 1.13 fatalities occurred for every 100 million miles of travel in 2009. The rate in 1966 was 5.5 deaths per 100 million miles.
