Lowell, Indiana – December 31, 2011
The Indiana State Police filed a report of an accident with injuries that occurred near mile marker 239.5 on Interstate 65 on Saturday. Harold Goldman, 77, allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel of his 2003 Nissan Murano, causing the accident.
Mr. Goldman started to drift off the left side of southbound I-65 when he veered back right across the roadway. His vehicle then rolled down the embankment. Mr. Goldman’s wife Charlene, 71, complained of pain all over and had to be extracted before being taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Crown Point.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 1.13 fatalities occurred for every 100 million miles of travel in 2009. The rate in 1966 was 5.5 deaths per 100 million miles.
