Newport, Indiana — December 31, 2011

The Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department has filed a report of an accident with injury to a pedestrian at the intersection of Old State Road 63 and County Road 595 South in rural Vermillion County. Yvonne Jones, 57, was struck by Heather Lawhorn, 22, at approximately 6:43 p.m.

Ms. Jones walking in the roadway of 575 N. Old State Road 63 when she was struck by Ms. Lawhorn’s vehicle as she was negotiating a curve. Officials say the roadway was dark and wet at the time of the incident.

Ms. Jones was later airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Terre Haute with serious injuries.

According to the National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, driver error is responsible for more than 90 percent of serious traffic accidents.
