Franklin, Indiana – November 14, 2011

A Franklin teenager was injured Monday afternoon when a car struck him on his moped.

According to the Franklin Police Department, 38-year-old Erick S. Hege of Indianapolis was driving a 1998 Nissan Altima west on Hospital Road when he slowed to make a left turn west of Drake Road. About 3:20 p.m. Mr. Hege began to turn left and struck an eastbound 2010 Blue Eagle moped driven by 16-year-old Franklin resident Andrew D. Smith. Andrew, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from his vehicle.

Andrew was transported to a hospital for medical attention to severe bleeding from his head.

In Indiana, motorcycle helmets are required for all riders under 17.
