Clinton, Indiana – May 27, 2010 – Tyler Hayes, 20, of Clinton, was struck and killed early Thursday as he walked along Ind. 63 at North Main Street.

According to authorities, Hayes was hit by two northbound semis that also failed to stop at the scene of the accident.  Police officers stated that Hayes’ father had earlier reported him as missing and that they were in the process of searching for the man when they received word of the accident.

Immediately after striking Hayes, both truck drivers continued northbound; however, the first semi-truck broke down approximately 1.8 miles away due to a ruptured radiator. The other semi-truck was located approximately 16 miles north of the accident site.

Authorities said that both truck drivers, Bakary Sidibe, 42, of Indianapolis, and Alan Whitaker, 55, of Kentucky, believed they had hit a deer and claimed they had no idea it had been a person. Both drivers were arrested for failure to stop at the scene of a fatal accident and booked into the Vermillion County Jail.

The accident investigation is ongoing to determine how and why Hayes entered the roadway.
