A man from Decatur suffered critical injuries when he was reportedly struck by a deputy’s squad car Friday night on North Jasper Street.
The Decatur Police Department reports 55-year-old Tom Lennox was hit at about 10:40 p.m., south of Pershing Road, as he was in the street to pick up a mattress that had fallen from the pickup in which he was riding. The squad car reportedly then hit the pickup.
Mr. Lennox was transported to Carle Foundation Hospital and, according to reports, was still listed in critical condition there days after the accident. The name of the Macon County Sheriff’s Office deputy who was driving the squad car has not been released, but this man was not injured, according to the report.
The accident remains under investigation.
In 2008, about 4,500 pedestrians were killed nationally as the result of traffic crashes. The state of Illinois accounted for 135 of those fatalities, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.
