Cook County, Illinois — May 16, 2012
No children were injured but four people were hospitalized following a three-vehicle wreck Wednesday morning near Orland Park.
The Cook County Sheriff’s Department reports the crash occurred around 8:40 a.m. at the intersection of Harlem Avenue and 135th Street when the Homer School District 33C bus was hit during a left turn by a northbound vehicle. Following that collision, the bus went on to hit a truck reportedly driven by Tareq Abusharkh.
The bus was reportedly transporting five total students from Will County District 92 and District 33C, but none was injured, the report says.
Injured and transported to Palos Community Hospital were the bus driver and three occupants from the vehicle that hit the bus, including that vehicle’s driver. Their names and conditions were not released, but their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
The northbound driver was reportedly cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2008 more than 2.3 million reported intersection-related crashes, resulted in more than 7,770 fatalities and approximately 733,000 injuries.
