The Bloomington Police Department reports that one died Thursday when a minivan hit a pedestrian on Veterans Parkway.
According to reports, the time of the incident was about 6:15 p.m., and the scene was located near Oakland Avenue. The pedestrian has been identified as 50-year-old Melvin Jones Jr. Officials say he had been walking across Veterans Parkway when a minivan collided with him, causing fatal injuries.
The driver of the minivan remains unidentified at this time, and police did not indicate whether or not any charges will result. The vehicle was traveling north when it hit Mr. Jones, and it was not known if he had been walking in a crosswalk at the time.
In 2008, about 4,500 pedestrians were killed nationally as the result of traffic crashes. The state of Illinois accounted for 135 of those fatalities, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.
