Police say a female motorist died and her teenage passenger was injured Wednesday during a collision near Marietta.

According to the Cobb County Police Department, an unidentified motorist was behind the wheel of a Nissan Titan pickup truck as it traveled west along Dallas Highway. As the Titan approached Due West Road, around 12:55 p.m., the driver observed an eastbound Toyota Avalon cross into his path.

Investigators say the Titan’s driver was unable to avoid a collision with the Avalon, driven by 46-year-old Paulding County resident Delores Sibert. The impact caused one of the vehicles to strike a nearby Toyota Sequoia sport-utility vehicle.

Paramedics responded to the scene and transported Ms. Sibert to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, but doctors were unable to save her. A male passenger, 14, described as Ms. Sibert’s son, was transported by helicopter to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

The driver of the Titan and the Sequoia escaped unhurt. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 1.13 fatalities occurred for every 100 million miles of travel in 2009. The rate in 1966 was 5.5 deaths per 100 million miles.

A pedestrian died after Saturday being hit by multiple vehicles in the Morrow area of Atlanta.

According to deputies with the Clayton County Sheriff’s Department, an unidentified motorist was behind the wheel of a vehicle as it traveled along Interstate 75. As the vehicle approached Exit 231 (Mount Zion Boulevard), at an unknown hour, it made contact with a subject on foot.

Investigators say several other vehicles also struck the victim, identified as Missouri resident John Scott Lewis, 22. Paramedics responded to the scene, but were unable to save the pedestrian.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that pedestrian deaths fell 12 percent from 1996 to 2006. Over that period, the total number of deaths fell from 5,449 to 4,784.

Police say a pedestrian died after being hit by a vehicle Wednesday in the Vinings area of Atlanta.

According to reports, an unidentified motorist was behind the wheel of a vehicle as it traveled through the area during the evening hours. As the vehicle approached the junction of Interstate 285 and Interstate 75, it made contact with a subject on foot.

Investigators say several other vehicles also struck the victim and stopped appropriately. Paramedics responded to the scene, but were unable to save the pedestrian.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that a pedestrian dies in a U.S. traffic accident every 110 minutes and one is injured every nine minutes.

Police say a motorist struck and killed a bicyclist Wednesday in the Augusta area, then fled the scene.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department, Christopher Provost was behind the wheel of a red and silver Dodge Ram pickup truck as it traveled along Georgia State Route 56 (Mike Padgett Highway). As Mr. Provost approached Phinizy Road, around 6:25 a.m., he swerved to the side and made contact with a bicycle.

Rather than stopping to administer aid, Mr. Provost reportedly drove off. Paramedics responded to the scene, but were unable to save the rider, 42-year-old Augusta resident Dennis Skillman of Hephzibah.

Investigators later caught up with Mr. Provost and discovered that he had re-painted part of the pickup black. He was arrested on suspicion of leaving an accident scene and vehicular homicide.

Police say a motorcyclist was hurt Thursday during a collision with a vehicle in the Augusta area.

According to deputies with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Department, 25-year-old Martinez resident Rex Reed was behind the wheel of a 1999 Toyota Camry as it traveled west along Interstate 20. As Mr. Reed approached Exit 194 (Georgia State Route 383/Belair Road), around 5:10 p.m., he was hit from behind by a red Harley-Davidson motorcycle, ridden by Alton Creech, 32.

Paramedics responded to the scene and transported Mr. Creech by helicopter to Georgia Regents Medical Center for treatment of major trauma. Mr. Creech is reportedly a deputy with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department.

The National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found driver error was the primary cause in 90 percent of major traffic crashes.

Police are saying that a street racing crash killed a teenager and an infant on Friday in Conyers.

A Honda Accord driven by 22-year-old Kyrie Alassen Anderson was racing another car on Interstate 20 in the eastbound lanes when she struck a guardrail before crossing the median and hitting a truck in the westbound lanes. Ms. Anderson’s 7-month old baby and 19-year-old boyfriend Edi Rodriguez died in the crash according to the Georgia State Police.

Ms. Anderson was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital along with the driver and passengers in the pickup. Their conditions were not released.

In 2010, speeding was a factor in 32 percent of motor vehicle crash deaths according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Speeding has been a factor in about one-third of crash deaths since 2001.

A 14-year-old boy was killed Monday in a bicycle accident on Georgia State Route 110.

The accident occurred three miles west of U.S. Route 82 when Justin Cody Smith was riding along the road at 10:40 a.m. The Brantley County Sheriff’s Office stated that he switched lanes to avoid one vehicle and was knocked into a nearby ditch by a second car he did not see.

Justin was declared dead at the scene.

Frampere Ingle, 24, was killed Wednesday evening in a wrong-way accident on Georgia State Route 400 near the Atlanta Financial Center tunnel. The Atlanta Police Department stated that the accident occurred at 4:15 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the highway.

Officials stated that Ms. Inge entered the wrong way at Lenox Road before colliding with Eric Hanks. Mr. Hanks also died on the scene. An unidentified passenger of Ms. Inge was also seriously injured. Neither of them were wearing seat belts.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 85 percent of adults use safety belts, compared to only 81 percent of travelers in 2002. Overall, seat belt use has risen dramatically since 1982 when the usage rate was only 11 percent.

The Fulton County Police Department reported that an unidentified 35-year old man was killed when a forklift he was operating fell on him. The accident happened just before 7 p.m. at the Owens Corning facility on McLarin Road.

The operator of the forklift was not wearing a seat belt as he was moving around products. He fell to the floor when the forklift tilted and it landed on his head.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, out of 4,206 worker fatalities in private industry in calendar year 2010, 774 or 18.7% were in construction. The leading causes of worker deaths on construction sites were falls, followed by electrocution, struck by object, and caught-in/between. These “Fatal Four” were responsible for nearly three out of five (56%) construction worker deaths in 2010.

An officer with the Marietta Police Department was serious injured in a Thursday afternoon accident on the Canton Connector near the Church Street Extension. The accident happened at 2 p.m. when the officer was assisting with an accident and he was hit by another car.

The officer was identified as a 26-year old rookie on the force. No names were given in the accident, and the driver of the second vehicle was cooperative with officials.
