U.S. Route 550 in New Mexico seeing increased drunk driving patrols

Over the holidays U.S. Route 550 between Bloomfield, new Mexico and Cuba, New Mexico was a hotbed for drunk driving activity. The four-lane highway that goes through primarily rural countryside in the Four Corners area had a string of six drunk driving deaths in six weeks, leading local officials to work on a cooperative effort to crack down on these actions.

Officials with the New Mexico State Police, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Department, and the Navajo Nation have decided to work together to increase patrols along this stretch of highway. That hasn’t stopped some private citizens from getting involved as well.

Skyler Weise, a driver on U.S. 550 near Farmington took matters into his own hands when he chased down a suspected drunk driver on foot and hogtied him to make sure he stayed put until police arrived. While this is not the preferred method of getting drunk drivers off the road, it does seem to be rather effective.
