Is there such a thing as a safe pit bull?
A recent incident in Chicago has reopened the discussion on the safety concerns caused by keeping pit bulls in heavily-populated areas. Should the breed be banned altogether, or is there a safe way for owners to keep such animals and not expose others to risk? For what it’s worth, the Paws Chicago Animal Shelter has come forward to say that the burden of safety falls on the owner. Instead of revering the pit bull breed as unreasonably dangerous, perhaps proper socialization techniques and spaying and neutering are all it would take to calm the fears of residents shaken by what happened to Joseph Finley. According to the shelter, any dog of substantial weight can pose a threat, and there is nothing in the genes of a pit bull that make it predisposed to violent behavior… But the shelter may face considerable opposition in Chicago, where officials are making a strong push to follow through on the pit bull ban.
