Several vehicles were involved in a Sunday accident on Interstate 8 in San Diego near Hotel Circle at approximately 1:40 p.m. according to police.

The driver of a Ford Explorer was eastbound and lost control according to the California Highway Patrol. The SUV rolled several times and hit two other unidentified vehicles.

Officials said that three people were ejected from the SUV and one was killed. The other two were seriously injured and were hospitalized.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that nearly three of every four fatal rollovers occur on a rural road with a posted speed limit of 55 mph or higher, and excessive speeding is cited as a contributory factor in about 40 percent of fatal rollovers.
