A major accident on the Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna Beach killed one person and injured five on Sunday according to highway patrol officials.

The accident happened just after 1:30 on Sunday and involved five vehicles near the intersection with Irvine Cove Drive according to the Laguna Beach Police Department. A northbound driver hit a car within his lane before crossing the median and hitting several southbound vehicles according to police.

No names were released in the accident, but the deceased was a passenger in the vehicle that started the crash. The other injuries in the accident ranged from severe to minor.

The National Safety Council reports that traffic fatalities increased 5 percent in 2012. A recent study revealed 36,200 traffic deaths last year, up from 34,600 in 2011, the first increase in seven years.

UPDATE: Officials identified the deceased victim as 29-year-old Erik Valencia of Irvine.
