Police say two workers sustained serious injuries when they were struck by a metal object in West Sacramento Wednesday morning.

According to the West Sacramento Police Department, two workers were digging a pipeline trench near Jefferson Boulevard and 15th Street when a large metal panel being raised up by a crane fell and struck both men. Authorities report the metal panel is used to support the ditch once it is dug.

Both workers were hospitalized with serious injuries after the 4:05 a.m. incident. They are both contractors with Pacific Gas & Electric.

Officers are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

According to the California Department of Industrial Relations, 390 workers died on the job in 2011.
