Sacramento County, California — September 1, 2013

Officials say one motorist died and four others were hospitalized after a rear-end wreck in Sacramento Sunday morning.

According to the Sacramento Police Department, 27-year-old Ryan Hoppe was traveling at a high rate of speed in his sport-utility vehicle on the Watt Avenue off-ramp from U.S. Route 50 when he rear-ended a vehicle driven by an unidentified motorist. The impact caused both vehicles to flip and Mr. Hoppe to be thrown from his vehicle.

A passenger in the second vehicle, 35-year-old Christine Shimosaka of Sacramento, died at the scene from her injuries in the 1:55 a.m. wreck.

Three other occupants of the second vehicle as well as Mr. Hoppe were hospitalized with unspecified injuries.

Officers are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

According to the National Safety Council, more than 2.5 million rear-end collisions are reported every year, making them the most common type of automobile accident.
