Officials say three workers were injured, one critically, in an oil well explosion at the Elk Hills Oil lease site Saturday afternoon.

According to the Kern County Fire Department, three workers were on the job at the lease site when an explosion occurred. It is not known what caused the explosion.

One worker was flown to a nearby hospital with serious burns. Two other workers were hospitalized with unspecified injuries. Their identities have not been released.

Officials are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, 200 people were killed in the workplace from fires and explosions in 1995 and more than 5,000 were injured.
