An explosion of a suspected hash lab in Eureka injured a 2-year-old child on Friday according to police.

The incident occurred at 10 p.m. Friday at an apartment on Searles Street near West Avenue when neighbors heard a what they thought was a gunshot. The Eureka Police Department arrived to find the boy with extensive burns and his parents, 19-year-old Andrea Ruiz-Guerrero and 21-year-old Logan Hughes, with minor burns.

The couple was arrested after being taken to Saint Joseph Hospital on charges of felony child endangerment. The child was airlifted to a Sacramento hospital with burns on a third of his body.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, 200 people were killed in the workplace from fires and explosions in 1995 and more than 5,000 were injured.
