Calaveras County, California — July 22, 2013

Officials say two motorists were hospitalized with minor injuries after a two-vehicle drowsy driving crash near Copperopolis Monday afternoon.

According to California Highway Patrol, 67-year-old Richard Soracco of Angels Camp was traveling in his Chevrolet Colorado near the intersection of California State Route 4 and South Waverly Road when he allegedly fell asleep at the wheel, crossed the center line, and collided with the Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 62-year-old Diane Lauterbach of Hathaway Pines. The impact caused both vehicles to spin in the roadway.

Ms. Lauterbach was transported to Sonora Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. Mr. Soracco was transported to Mark Twain Medical Center with minor injuries.

Officials are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 100,000 police-reported crashes are the direct result of driver fatigue each year.
