Officials say a husband and wife were injured in a two-vehicle collision near Los Banos Monday evening.

According to California Highway Patrol, 37-year-old Solomon Smith of Hollywood was traveling in his 2005 Jeep sport-utility vehicle near the intersection of Interstate 5 and California State Route 165 around 5:15 p.m. when he lost control for unknown reasons, drove into the median, and flipped his vehicle multiple times. The impact caused debris from the crash to strike the 2013 BMW driven by 31-year-old Todd Schram of Miami.

Mr. Smith’s wife, 40-year-old Lynette King-Smith of Hollywood, was transported to Memorial Hospital Los Banos with serious injuries. Mr. Smith sustained minor injuries.

Mr. Schram was not hurt.

Officials are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports 18.6 percent of all crashes in 2009 happened off the roadway or on the median or shoulder.
