Police say a bicyclist died after being struck by a vehicle in Elk Grove Sunday night.

According to the Elk Grove Police Department, an unidentified 25-year-old male bicyclist was traveling near the intersection of Franklin High Road and Vilamoura Way around 11:10 p.m. when he was struck by a pickup truck driven by an unidentified motorist.

The bicyclist was hospitalized, but later died from his injuries. His identity has not been released.

The truck driver was not hurt.

Officers are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

In 2009, 630 pedalcyclists were killed and an additional 51,000 were injured in motor vehicle traffic crashes according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
