Officials say a female bicyclist died and her husband was hospitalized after being struck by a vehicle in Pleasanton Sunday afternoon.

According to the Pleasanton Police Department, an unidentified husband and wife were riding their bicycles near the intersection of Foothill Road and Golden Eagle Way around 1:10 p.m. when they were struck by a vehicle driven by an unidentified 18-year-old male motorist from Pleasanton. The impact caused the wife to be thrown from her bicycle.

The wife died at the scene. Her husband was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Their identities have not been released.

Officers are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

According to the Center for Injury Research and Prevention at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, 681,000 people were involved in crashes with teen drivers in 2008.

UPDATE: The deceased bicyclist has been identified as 58-year-old Diana Hersevoort of Dublin.

UPDATE: The motorist has been identified as Cody Hall of Pleasanton.
