Officials say a bicyclist died after being struck by a vehicle in Berkeley Saturday morning.

According to California Highway Patrol, 24-year-old Michael Arthur of Boston, Massachusetts was attempting to cross the roadway on his bicycle near the intersection of Interstate 80 and University Drive around 4:40 a.m. when he was struck by a vehicle driven by an unidentified motorist.

Mr. Arthur died from his injuries. The motorist was not hurt.

Officials are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of this incident.

In 2009, 630 pedalcyclists were killed and an additional 51,000 were injured in motor vehicle traffic crashes according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
